What a wonderful, fascinating, entertaining, time-consuming, addictive, expensive, way to avoid housework!  I haveta tell ya...if you consider (even slightly) making dollhouses and miniatures your hobby you better invest in a really good crockpot because the husband, kids and pets are going to starve to death if you don't!

If you have microsoft paint program on your computer you can design your own refrigerator kid pics!  Make anything you like then size to about 1inch by 1inch, print it out, cut it out and stick on the refrigerator.

lamp.jpg

To make the lamp you will need

  • one fancy large bead
  • small round gold finding
  • 1/8th dowel cut to 2 inches long
  • 1 small wooden spool
  • coffee creamer container (empty of course)
  • 1 gold sequence bead
  • gold seed bead
  • gold trim

Glue the gold finding to bottom of large bead.  Insert glue into hole in large bead, insert one end of dowel.  Dab some glue on the other end of the dowel and insert into the hole in the wooden spool.  Cut trim to fit around coffee creamer (enough for the top and bottom).  Glue trim around the top and bottom of creamer.  Attach the sequence bead and the gold seed bead to the top center of the creamer.  Attach the creamer to the wooden spool and voila!  I use tweezers to attach the really teeny stuff.  Patience is a virtue!

fancyclock.jpg

To make the fancy clock you will need:

  • small wooden disc approximately 1 inch in diameter
  • 8 round toothpicks
  • gold paint
  • picture of clock face (just a bit smaller than the wooden disc)

Using an exacto knife, cut toothpicks into 2 pieces, making one piece 2/3rds length and the other piece 1/3rd (be careful when cutting!).  On the wooden disc, notch 16 holes in the side being careful to space them evenly.  Glue toothpicks into notches on wooden disc, staggering a short one and a long one.  After the glue has dried paint the clock with gold paint.  Cut out the clock face and glue to one side of the wooden disc.  You could also dab tiny dots of paint for the numbers using the opposite side of a small paintbrush dipping it in the paint and dabbing it on the clock.  Paint small lines for the clock hands.  I used modge podge on the whole clock to seal it.

Some Tips
If you have a tip for making miniatures and you would like to contribute to this site, please send it to my email address:   gigglebytes@tds.net
I will be sure to post it here and give you credit  :)

  • After you paint tiny wood turnings for dishes, bowls or vases use modge podge to seal the paint and make it shiny.
  • Use small wooden dowels for curtain rods, paint any color you like.  Slide curtains on rods then attach beads to ends of dowels and hang over the windows!  I used earthquake glue to hold the rods in place.  This is so I can remove the items later on if I want to.  I'm sure you Californians know what I'm talking about but we have earthquake glue on the East coast too!  You can find it at craft stores and some department stores.  I can't remember the brand name but I found the best kind only comes in orange color.
  • I used wood glue to attach the paneling in the dining room and also to glue down the carpet and flooring.  Smooth the glue with a credit card or similiar item before you attach the paneling and flooring.

I find that a lot of things I make are done by trial and error.  Experiment and have fun!
